When area code 518 was put into service on January 1, 1947, it was one of New York’s original area codes. An overlay area code, 838, has been approved and is to be implemented in September 2017.

In 1661, Arent van Curler and other colonists settled the area. In 1690, French forces and their Indian allies attacked Schenectady by burning the town down and killing the majority of the inhabitants; this was known as the Schenectady Massacre. Schenectady was incorporated as a borough in 1765 and then was chartered as a city in 1798. Today Schenectady has a population of 66,135 and the racial makeup of the city is 59.38% White, 24.19% African American, 14.47% Hispanic, and 2.62% Asian (2010 Census).
