Alexander D. Stewart, 73, the fifth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts, died yesterday of pancreatic cancer. Patricia Coller, assistant to the Episcopal Diocese's eighth Bishop Gordon Scruton, said Bishop Stewart died about 4 a.m. terday at the Sonbridge Nursing Home in East Longmeadow. Stewart was elected fifth bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of West1 ern Massachusetts, covering the five western counties from Westboro to Williamstown, in April of 1970.

He succeeded the Most Rev. Robert M. Hatch and served as diocesan bishop for 14 years. In 1984, he responded to the re, quest of the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church to become the executive for administration of the Episcopal Church in New York City. With the advent of the new presi siding bishop in 1987, Stewart joined the Church Pension Group, of which he had been a trustee for 11 years.

As executive vice president and manager of the fund, he was in charge of financial and retirement planning for clergymen and traveled extensively throughA out the country. He maintained his residence in Longmeadow for 29 years. William Coyne, the archdeacon of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts, who was ordained by Stewart in 1978 said, "I was proud to call him one of my bishops." WOODRUFF Reginald A. Woodruff, 93, of 619 College Highway, Southwick died Wednesday In the Holyoke Soldiers Home in Holyoke. Born April 15, 1906 in Summit, NJ. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy during WWII. Initially stationed at Newport RI where he was involved with recruit training, he later served as Damage Control Officer aboard the Alr Craft Carrier USS Tarawa (CV40).

He was Past Commander of both the American Legion Post 338 in Southwick and the Agawam, West Springfield Post 55. He was a self-employed tool distributor for torty-five years. He was active in Southwick town politics, serving as Chairman of the Conservation Commission and later as Chairman of the Water Commission. He was a member of the Southwick Congregational Church, and a Life Member of the Masonic Lodge in Newport RI. His wife the former Louisa E.

Fletcher died July 14, 1998. With his wife he estabilshed a science award at Southwick High School, given in memory of their son Dr. Jack F. Woodruff. He leaves Three sons Allen G.
